She is a self-taught artist who works in fabric and watercolour painting. Today she works in three mediums, watercolour on paper, canvas and fabric. She began working with fabric as a child sewing her own clothing and creating artwork by knitting, rug hooking, embroidering, weaving and macrame. Over thirty years ago, she started taking art lessons in drawing and watercolour painting. As she developed her watercolour painting skills, she started to marry the two mediums together. What she learned about watercolour, she started to apply to fabric. She says, “sometimes my watercolours are catalysts for my fabric art.” Using learned watercolour techniques, she paints images on cotton and often uses glue resist, paint pouring, chalk pastels, sandpaper transfers, heliographic painting, stencilling, acrylic gels, and fabric crayons. She embellishes her work with tulle, sequins, beads embroidery, metallic threads, yarns and found objects. All of Donna’s fabric artwork is hand quilted and finished with a sleeve in the top and bottom (so that the art work can be hung on a wall).
